One of my favorite ways to nourish hair, skin and overall health. Here’s a list for you to get everything you need to make a rich, nourishing GELATINOUS broth (that’s the goal because that’s where the good stuff is!).
A couple notes:
*Quality of bones matters for good broth! Organic, local is best when possible because it contains less pesticides, heavy metals.
** Bone quantity is for 6 quarts.
What you will need:
- Bones (Ideally should come from free range chickens, grass fed/pastured cows for higher nutrient content. Some bones might be harder to get from a conventional grocery store but you can always ask the butcher if they have certain bones. Some will save them for you if you ask. Ethnic markets tend to have more variety of cuts. You can also go to a local butcher shop or even order online.).
Any of the following:
- Chicken feet (4-6) — this is my preference for taste and consistency;
- whole chicken carcass with neck, wings, feet;
- 2-4 lbs beef tail, knuckles, shank;
- you can also use any leftover bones you have! 2-4 lbs;
- **put your bones in boiling water for 2-3 minutes before slow cooking them to get rid of impurities.
Aromatics (this is my go-to, but you can use whatever you like. This will add to the flavor):
- Onion;
- Garlic;
- Celery;
- Carrots;
- Peppercorn
- Fennel seeds;
- Coriander seeds;
- **you can add parmesan for a salty, richness in flavor;
- Vinegar - any type will work, I use apple cider vinegar
- Filtered water
- Salt - a LOT. Likely more than you would think. This is the salt I use. Code: DRNADIA for a discount.
Equipment/tools you’ll need:
- Stove + stock pot or slow cooker;
- Designated bone broth mug. You don’t *have* to but it does make it fun and special :)
Feel free to get creative, add the flavors you like. I usually use a slow cooker and because of that leave it cooking overnight and it’s ready to sip in the morning after you strain and salt it!
